VSP Premier Edge, Western University of Health Sciences Offer New Diabetes Continuing Education Event Highlighting an Interprofessional Approach to Patient Care in Diabetes

|

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – VSP Premier Edge Training and Education, in partnership with Western University of Health Sciences, announced a new virtual diabetes education event on ways to best provide well-rounded care to patients living with the condition. Bringing together four different disciplines – optometry, pharmacy, podiatry, and dentistry – the course highlights an interprofessional approach to patient care in diabetes. The free course qualifies for two COPE-accredited Continuing Education (CE) credits.

“With more than 38 million Americans living with diabetes, and 1.2 million diagnosed each year, it’s critical we establish a holistic approach to care for those who are living with the disease,” said VSP Vision Vice President of Clinical and Medical Affairs Dr. Valerie Sheety-Pilon. “As a health-focused vision care company, VSP Vision is proud to offer this multi-disciplinary, educational opportunity that highlights the importance of eye care for those living with diabetes.”

Presented by Loretta Ng, OD, FAAO; Preeti Kotha, PharmD; Chandler Paige Hubbard, DPM; and Dalia Seleem, DDS, PhD, this course will:
•    Review interprofessional care based on the National Diabetes Education Program’s (NDEP) Working Together to Manage Diabetes: A Toolkit for Pharmacy, Podiatry, Optometry and Dentistry (PPOD) developed with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services.
•    Provide insights into common diabetic conditions the panelists’ treat and consider critical for the management of patients living with diabetes.
•    Offer ways to best provide holistic care, which includes reviewing pathological effects of diabetes on the body’s various systems, the clinical implications, and complications of unmanaged diabetes.
•    Recommend potential modifications to achieve holistic management of diabetes in clinical practices.

Upon completion of the entire virtual event, if the practice has retinal imaging equipment, doctors will be eligible to receive the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) Badge, which is displayed alongside their practice listing on the VSP® Find a Doctor Directory on vsp.com. Practices within the VSP Vision network benefit from the hundreds of thousands of visitors monthly to the directory and the ADA Badge offers a powerful way to stand out and highlight a practice’s commitment to connecting vision to the overall health of patients at risk of living with diabetes.
