VSP Vision Names Usha Patil Chief Insurance Officer

Kate Renwick-Espinosa, Chief Network Officer, departs organization after more than three decades

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – VSP Vision announced today that Usha Patil has been appointed chief insurance officer. She will lead the organization's not-for-profit vision benefits business, VSP Vision Care, which serves more than 85 million members.

“Usha brings a strong background in leading operations, strategy, and performance in the healthcare industry,” said Michael Guyette, president and CEO of VSP Vision. “Her expertise in consumer experience and digital transformation will help us deliver more value to our members and clients, including improved healthcare outcomes, through ongoing product innovations that meet the needs of the diverse communities we serve.”

Patil joins VSP Vision from UnitedHealth Group, where she spent the last 14 years in a variety of senior leadership roles, most recently leading operations for UnitedHealthcare’s individual and family ACA plans. She previously served as vice president of digital transformation and consumer experience for Optum. Prior to UnitedHealth Group, Patil worked in risk advisory services at KPMG. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business management with an operations concentration from North Carolina State University.

Patil succeeds Kate Renwick-Espinosa, who made the decision to resign and take a CEO role outside of the vision care industry after more than three decades with the company. Renwick-Espinosa led VSP’s vision benefits business since 2015, and most recently served as chief network officer, a role which will also be backfilled.

“During her 32 years with the company, Kate took on progressively complex leadership roles, from the first chief marketing officer to the first female president of VSP Vision Care, and most recently as chief network officer,” said Guyette. “Her impact has been longstanding, and we are grateful for the leadership she has shown our employees and her many contributions to our stakeholders. We wish her all the best as she embarks on her new journey.”
